Docs and FAQ

Answers, including the awkward ones.

A quick reference for each module, then plain answers on licensing, data and limits.

Getting started

Install with the installer, start StrategyQuant X so it compiles the snippets, then follow each module’s set-up in the install guide. Every module also works on its own.

Licensing

What do I get when I buy?

A perpetual licence: you pay once, there is no subscription, and it is a lifetime licence. It includes every update and every future version of the product you bought, with no upgrade fees.

How many computers can I use it on?

Two at a time, for example your research PC and your trading VPS, each with the MetaTrader 5 terminals on that computer that you list at activation. You can move the licence as often as you like and nothing counts your moves.

How do I move to a new computer?

Run the installer on the new computer and enter your key at the licence step. If two computers already use the key, activating on a new one releases the one used least recently automatically; with only one in use, nothing is released and the new one simply joins it. If the old computer is gone or you want to free the key first, use the reset form on the download page, or run aw_license.ps1 -Action reset -Key YOUR-KEY from the Alphasworth program folder, where the installer puts that script.

Be aware of one honest limit: licence checks are offline, so the old computer is not switched off at the moment you move. Its licence file stops working at its next refresh. The updater task the installer registers refreshes it at logon and every 24 hours, so on a computer that is online that is within about a day. A licence file is valid for 3 days plus a 2-day grace period, so on a computer that never goes online again it stops 5 days after its last successful refresh at the very worst. Using one key on more than two computers at once is not allowed.

Is a licence locked to my machine?

Yes, to up to two machines. Each licence file carries a hash of that Windows machine’s identity and a list of the MetaTrader 5 terminals it may run in. A licence file copied to a machine you did not activate does not unlock there.

Does verification need the internet?

No. Each licence is a signed file (Ed25519) that is checked locally against a public key built into the software. The activation server is contacted only to activate, refresh, move or reset a licence, check for updates, download packages and free the seat when you uninstall. The updater task renews your 3-day licence file at logon and every 24 hours; if a renewal is missed the software keeps working for a 2-day grace period and tells you to connect to the internet.

What happens if a licence stops being valid?

This happens after a refund, a chargeback or a revocation for sharing a key, and also if the licence file cannot be renewed for more than 5 days (3 days plus the 2-day grace period). While it is in the grace period the software says “licence expires in N days - connect to the internet”. Gated components then show a clear “unlicensed” message instead of crashing, and never alter or corrupt your StrategyQuant projects. Gated blocks return an empty value and log once. A live strategy that depends on a gated block will stop receiving values, so keep the updater task enabled on any computer that trades live. The task runs only while a user is logged on, so a VPS needs automatic logon.

How is my licence protected?

Each licence is signed, locked to your hardware (two machines at a time), and verified offline by the products. It renews automatically in the background, and you can move it to another machine whenever you like.

Does Alternative Data need API keys?

Yes, two free ones that you register yourself: a FRED key (https://fredaccount.stlouisfed.org/apikeys; without it 11 of the 18 features cannot update) and an EIA key (https://www.eia.gov/opendata/register.php; it feeds the three petroleum features). The CFTC source needs no key, and News needs none.

Data and parity

Will MT5 see the same alt-data values SQX backtested on?

Yes for history: MetaTrader reads the exact exported files. Forward of the export, the MT5 service recomputes the 60 days below its cutoff and compares them with StrategyQuant’s rows before every write, and refuses to update if they differ. It does not run in the Strategy Tester, so backtests read frozen data.

Does any module look ahead?

Alternative Data joins on the date each observation became publicly knowable. News uses scheduled release times only, which are published in advance and never revised, and never the released value.

What if a data source stops updating?

Attach the Alternative Data monitor to a chart to see each feature with its age. The Alternative Data tab also reports age. Rebuilds that would lose rows are refused and the old file is kept.

Is my API key safe?

It is stored outside the plugin folder, never returned by the tab or API, and masked from logs. When you press Save keys, the keys are by default also copied to the MetaTrader Common\Files folder so the feed service can use them. That file is readable by every program on that terminal. You can untick the option, or press Remove keys from MT5, on a shared machine.

Platforms

Which trading platforms are supported?

StrategyQuant X is the research platform and MetaTrader 5 is the fully supported deployment target. Wyckoff, Alternative Data, News, book and NN blocks export to MetaTrader 5 only. Templates for MetaTrader 4, JForex, EasyLanguage and PseudoCode exist so StrategyQuant X lists the blocks everywhere, but they are not functional (an export that uses them will not compile or will run wrong) and are not supported.

An exported MT5 strategy stops with error 4802 or “cannot load indicator Sq…”.

Every EA that StrategyQuant X exports calls StrategyQuant’s own indicators (SqATR and the other Sq* files), which this product does not include. Copy the Sq*.mq5 files from custom_indicators\MetaTrader5\Indicators in your StrategyQuant X folder into the terminal’s MQL5\Indicators folder and compile them once in MetaEditor; the AW indicators the strategy uses must be there as well.

A strategy using an NN model prints a model-file message and shows zeros.

The NN indicators read the model from Common\Files\AWNN\<Family>_<id>.awnnm at run time; nothing is compiled. Press Deploy to MetaTrader 5 on the Models tab (it copies the file there), or copy the .awnnm from user\extend\Models\AWNN in your StrategyQuant X folder by hand. The Experts log names the exact problem: file missing, damaged, an unsupported format version, or a feature indicator (Sq*) that is not installed in the terminal. The indicator emits zeros until it is fixed.

The News or Alternative Data blocks never appear in the Builder.

A block is only selected if it can be evaluated. With no calendar imported, or no data downloaded, those blocks are unavailable by design. Import the calendar or press Update all on the Alternative data tab first.

General

Will this make me money?

We make no such claim and show no performance figures. These tools help you research and deploy strategies; whether any of them has edge on your instrument is for your own testing and robustness checks to decide. Trading can lose more than you deposit.

Is any of this investment advice?

No. See the risk disclaimer in the footer of every page and the EULA.

Do you include the Wyckoff books?

No. The Wyckoff rules follow two published texts, which are not distributed here. No third-party vendor manual or data is bundled either.

Where do I get support?

Use the contact page. We answer in the order received, normally within a few working days.
